Chapter 6

For this exercise we had to find two photographs of political or entertainment based opponents that were posted on the same date or issue. After finding the photos we used the six perspectives from Chapter 6 to analyze the two images. 

• Personal: My initial reaction to these photos was that there is just another feud between two well known celebrities at an award show. The first image gives off the impression that Miley Cyrus is shocked and defending herself. The second image gives off the impression that she is angry. I think the two photos gives off a negative reaction because of their facial and body expressions. 
• Historical: These types of photographs have been relevant in the media for a long time now. They grab people’s attention and interest. By using dramatic photographs, it draws viewers in, even if the conflict isn't as dramatic as the picture plays it out to be. The feud between Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj played out on live TV at the MTV Video Music Awards. Miley Cyrus called out Nicki Minaj for “not so nice comments about Taylor Swift.” Nicki decided to call out Miley Cyrus (the presenter for the VMA’s) while accepting her award. 
• Technical: These photos are credited to Michael Tan/Film Magic; Christopher Pol/Getty Images. The two people credited for these photos have taken photos at lots of other events, and give them to online blogs or magazines for their use. 
• Ethical: I don’t think there was any ethical harm in showing these photos in a magazine and online because it happened on live TV in front of millions of viewers. If Nicki Minaj didn't want the world to hear about this feud she would have talked to Miley Cyrus alone instead of during her acceptance speech on live TV. From these photographs there might have been some Hedonism since they are being used to sell a magazine and promote these two celebrities. Nicki Minaj might have even expressed her feelings over live TV on purpose to boost her own image in the media. 
• Cultural: The symbols in these photos include their microphones and Nicki Minaj’s award. The image of Miley Cyrus holding the microphone shows it is an event and she is speaking to an audience. Nicki Minaj’s award shows her dominance of wining and also that she now has the power to say what she wants. Within our culture award shows have been a source of many controversies because celebrities feel they have the power to say what they want while everybody is listening and watching.  
• Critical: My general conclusion is that celebrities are expected to have feuds and that when they do everyone has to hear about it. By experiencing this feud on TV then again in magazines and in pictures it shows how the media eats this type of drama up for their own gains, and it doesn't matter how the celebrity’s might feel about it.
